I use a desktop tool that I wrote called Backup Smart for this which takes a scheduled backup of my databases straight out of cPanel and saves them locally on my HDD. Aaron

I use the wordpress plugin and let the backup be mailed once a week to my Gmail account. Then on Gmail I've set up a filter that marks that mail automatically as read and archieves it.

Gmail has enough disk quota to store all my database backups. (if you want you can even set up a Gmail account ONLY for your database backups...)
ciao

Excelent guide, Although I've had a question for some time now, when you back up your wordpress, what exactly are you backing up?

Posts, registered users, commnets, categories?
Those types of things, I was actually looking for a complete list of these aspects that are backed up but I had no luck.

Hope you can help me.
Thank you.

Sorry to jump in here so late. First, many thanks for taking the time to put this together - it's incredibly useful and appreciated. I got it set up and working perfectly, except that the emails it sends don't have attachments. They all say "begin 644 ./etc/MySQL.sql.gz.UU", followed by a ridiculously long string of encoded text, which I'm guessing is the dump. The .gz backup is saved to my etc directory, it's just the email attachment that's screwy. Any ideas or thoughts on where to look for an answer?

We used an online backup system called http://www.disksave.com. They have a Linux or windows installer and it seemlessly integrates with Mysql and works fine. It encrypts the data as well for privacy issues.

Jon, I didn't write the script, but you might try to enter a path to your database where it says:

<code>DBNAME=</code>

Good luck, and let us know if it works!

I did manage to get the wp-db-backup to work on my test blog, and it worked for a few times on Futurosity, but now nothing happens when I try to backup. I didn't get any error messages. It might be a conflict with another plugin, but I prefer the cron_backup_1.2_without_mutt script anyway. I have it running every few hours when I'm home working, and can dial it back when I'm not posting as frequently. I was never able to get WP-cron to work on any of my blogs.

BTW, everyone should check out <a href="http://dimitry.arthero.com/" rel="nofollow">Dimitry's blog</a>. Gorgeous design.

Nice writeup. This will definitely come in handy. I'm surprised you had trouble getting WP plugins to works. Worked without a glitch for me. Does it give you any errors?
