People judge you by your typos

Simply put — Misspellings are a quick way to lose readership. I am guilty of typing faster than I think and thinking faster than I type. Most blog interfaces include a check spelling option.  The problem with many (if not all) of these is that you must actively engage the spell check for it to work.  So, you’ve finished your masterpiece…worked so hard…it took much longer than you’d planned…and you hit submit and... Read More

Is John Cougar Mellencamp right?

Speaking recently at a public seminar at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles Tuesday, John Cougar Mellencamp said this: I think the Internet is the most dangerous thing invented since the atomic bomb. It’s destroyed the music business. It’s going to destroy the movie business And then he said this after listening to a remastered Beatles track on an iPod: You could barely even recognize it as the same song. You could tell it was those guys singing,... Read More

Upstart Blogger alumni program

Google slaps Squidoo

Another item of note that was in the massive box that we took possession of recently is a large but bloated Squidoo account in the previous owners name. In this account there are a little over 100 Squidoo lenses, most of which are pointing to blog properties that we now own. Sounds great, doesn’t it? All that juicy Seth Godin inspired Web 2.0 traffic. Unfortunately this isn’t good news. First of all we don’t have a log in for the... Read More

Being Green – Kermit said it best

The word of the moment – quite possibly the decade – is “Green.”  It is the “it” thing to be.  Kermit, you led the way…and it certainly ain’t easy. From cleaners to clothing to food products to transportation to appliances to government incentives…all things are turning green.  Well, at least marketing themselves as such.  I would love to see how the packaging in the cleaning and detergent... Read More

Simple Money from your Twitter Following, Part 2

Awhile back I mentioned a great way to make easy money getting paid to tweet advertisements. I wanted to follow up with a few tips and hints to make it even more successful. If you missed that first article, the recap is that you sign up with Sponsored Tweets, then they start giving you offers to tweet certain things. You write your own tweets then they send them out at an interval you specify. I’ve outlined a few tips and tricks to make... Read More

Getting the most reader “bang” for the blogger “buck”

I have found that I have a limitation when it comes to promoting my blog…TIME.  Not only am I having to balance the amount of time I spend promoting my blog on Facebook and Twitter, connecting with other bloggers on group sites, and providing guest blogger content (ahem…) with my blog writing itself…I’m also trying to work full-time, raise a baby daughter, eat, sleep, and sometimes shower.  I – by no means – am... Read More

Blogging – Obtaining (and Keeping) an Audience

When I began Modern Super Momma, I knew exactly who my audience was…no one. Tempting as it was to send a blanket invite to all readers (friends and family) of my personal, limited-access baby blog, I needed (a) moms (b) who would read a blog (c) that could handle my trucker’s vocabulary.  This is a fairly small target group – that included only a handful of my friends. Here are a few tips I have for expanding your reading base. It Takes One... Read More

Blogging – Finding Your Flavor

Well hello, Upstart Blogger! I want my first post to give you a little introduction into my crazy world, so I thought I would make a list of the things you should know about me. 1. I’m a list person – obviously. I use lists to organize all of the things in my life that I need to do. Not that I’m actually going to DO them, but I at least end up with a list (that has normally been rewritten two or three times in the neatest penmanship). 2. I... Read More
