Create a Digg-style Site with Pligg

Jan 23  07

PliggIf you like Digg, you’ll love Pligg, the open source CMS that lets you create a digg-style site.

Pligg is still in beta (Beta 9 as I write this) and there are still a few kinks in the system. But it’s solid enough to use now. In fact, I’ve just ported my old blog Futurosity from WordPress to Pligg. Futurosity is now dedicated to discovering the best stories about the future, gathered by our members from around the Web. Have a look, become a member, and submit your stories.

I don’t find Pligg as easy or intuitive to use as WordPress and a dearth of templates will limit your design choices unless you want to poke around in the code. I ported a template from Six Shooter Media, hacking the design into the default Pligg template from Digital Nature, but it wasn’t easy deciphering the logic of Pligg’s file structure, and there’s no documentation on the tags. But Pligg’s community is growing, and there’s an active forum and IRC channel where you should be able to find the help you need if you give Pligg a try.

It will be interesting to see how Pligg is taken up by the blogging community and if it will make a dent in sites like Digg. Pligg’s success will depend on the site creator’s ability to attract a committed community of active members, but the fact that the software is now available means a lot of experiments will undoubtedly pop up all over the Web.

 Stumble it!

Pligg has been out for a while now. BTW, good job on porting solemnity to Pligg.

Aside: You might want to remove those images next to Google ads at the bottom of posts. It’s not allowed by Google any more. http://adsense.blogspot.com/2006/12/ad-and-image-placement-policy.html

Thanks, Sridhar. And thanks for the tip about the Google ads. So much for the adsenseBeautifier plugin.

BTW, I took a look at your site. Some good stuff there. Recommended.
