Free and secure online backup
My recent hard drive explosion left me frustrated and annoyed at the lack of a genuinely bullet proof backup system. The only solution that seemed remotely secure was the one that was as far away from the source of the data as possible.
And so, the hunt for a good online backup solution was on. I must admit, I was very skeptical. After all, how on earth could I transfer the contents of several five hundred gigabyte hard drives over a fairly standard broadband connection?
My search lead me to a company called Mozy.
And, much to my delight, they offered me, and still offer, a free two gigabyte backup account to anyone who wants one. If that wasn’t enough to persuade me to open a trial account the fact that they are, unlike their competitors, Mac friendly, closed the deal.
I opened a trial account, downloaded the software and followed the painfully simple instructions.
Within a few minutes a folder on my Mac was on it’s way to being backed up a very long way away on Mozy’s 448 Bit Blowfish encrypted servers.
I left the software running overnight and in the morning my two gigabyte test folder was backed up safe and sound on the other side of the world.
It felt good. Even though it was only two gigabytes it felt very good. So good that I stumped up the $4.95 per month to open an unlimited account. Because, in my opinion, $4.95 per month is a drop in the ocean for that sort of service. Frankly, I spend more than that a month on blank DVDs simply to back up the copious amounts of photographs that I take.
I spend a lot more than that, more than twenty times that amount in fact, on hard drives every month.
And let’s be honest, $4.95 a month for unlimited secure storage is too good to miss.
Regular Upstart Blogger readers will know that I only promote products that I use and would happily reccomend to my friends and family. Indeed, AN Hosting, the only company that I currently actively promote has hosted all of my sites, very professionally, for a long time.
Put simply, I support them because they support me.
And now, I am very happy to lend that same support to Mozy.
If nothing else I’m sure you’ll find a good use for the free two gigabytes of secure storage space.

Why spend money when Oosah.com gives you 1 Terabyte for FREE ?
Yes, you owe me one. ;)

Wow, this is awesome man for real! I’m really digging the price point, and though I’m not a Mac user (love them, but can’t afford one just yet) I can appreciate the Mac friendly service.
Thanks for this. I’ve been meaning to sign up with Mozy. I haven’t done any kind of backups at all, though I know I should. Doing it this way makes the most sense to me, but getting news of your experience with them gives me a bit of ease in venturing there.

That is a very good price for unlimited storage. Do you know what type of upload speed they have?
