My copy of Getting things done, or GTD as it is known by those in the the know, has been sitting rather ironically in a pile of other books, albums, compositions, moleskines, comics, photographs, magazines and numerous other paper based stuff all of which needs organizing and sorting. Add to this a one month old 24″ iMac, a very faithful and well used G4 Titanium Powerbook, 2 PC laptops gathering dust, 8 external hard drives ranging in size from 80gb to 500gb, 2 iPods, numerous DSLR lenses, memory cards, digital video tapes, software and backup CDs and DVDs and a smattering of mice and trackballs. Each of the drives, internal and external, are bursting with photographs, music, backups, emails, podcasts, audiobooks, and anything else that can be squeezed into the digital realm.

And that is just my office. Our music room plays host to more than it’s fair share of albums, DVDs, finished and unfinished manuscript, various music books, enough sheet music to wallpaper the house several times over, my trumpets, cases, mutes, mouthpieces, oils, my gig diary, and so the list grows and grows. My record collection is so out of control that I have recently purchased a couple of albums that I already own.

Factor in my family, my music career, my blogs, my finances and everything and anything else and I become a very good candidate for GTD.

This weekend I’m taking the bull by the horns and doing phase one of GTD. The collection. Wish me luck, I think I’m going to need it.
