How much traffic do you need to make money online?

It’s a question that appears all over the internet, on blogs and forums from every corner of the globe. Very rarely does it receive an answer however. And that’s a shame, since it is one of the key questions in the minds of most bloggers.

Well, here’s the honest answer. You can make money with any number of visitors.

First of all, forget everything your stats package tells you about your traffic. The single most important thing you need to, in order to answer this question at least, is how many unique visitors you have per day. It is this number that will determine how much income you can make. Everything else, design, page views, advertisement quality and placement, is all leverage on those visitors. Without enough visitors it doesn’t matter how good your site is.

From my own personal experience one hundred unique visitors a day is plenty to start making money, albeit a small amount.

Five hundred visitors a day can generate around $250 a week with proper advertising and visitor management. And by visitor management I mean blog design, advertising choice and placement, reader engagement, that sort of thing.

One thousand visitors a day buys you a ticket to the $500 a week club, again with proper advertising and visitor management.

If you want a rough equation take the amount of unique visitors you have per day and divide it by two to get a weekly income estimate. This will work for blogs that have good content, a targeted audience and good advertisement choice and placement.

There are no guarantees that this equation will hold true for your traffic. But, it is absolutely possible to enjoy that sort of income to traffic ratio from a well managed blog and many people do, me included.

So, why not make Friday the 13th lucky for you and start a blog today? Click here grab a free domain name and wordpress setup from AN Hosting. And yet lots of bloggers (me included, at the moment) miss out the opportunity to monetize.

Regarding a phrase in your opening paragraph: I didn’t know the globe had corners. I thought it was spherical; a globe.

I feel that your estimates on how much you can make per month are a little high. $500 for 7000 visitors. Lets say you sold 10 ad spots for $50 a piece. Thats a cpm of $14. The average I’ve seen is around $2/cpm.

I’m sure there are one or two blogs pulling in this much revenue from such little traffic but my guess is that there aren’t too many.

That’s interesting. Did you made that $500 yourself when you had a 1000 uniques/day? Is this equation based on your own experience?

Thanks for finally answering the question about traffic! I’ve posted a similar question on a blogging forum and only got four responses. None of the so called SEO experts, could even come up with an answer.

I had long suspected it would take numbers that you describe to generate enough traffic to make enough to just make the minimum payments from some advertisers.

Great article! Just one question though, how successful should your blog be before implementing ads and revenue generating things? Or would you recommend just starting these things from the beginning?

Josh – Hah, you know what I mean!

Adam – 1000 unique visitors a day can and does bring in well over $500 per week for many bloggers. It’s simply a case of picking the right affiliate programs and keeping your traffic engaged and on target. Sure, you’re never going to do anywhere near that figure with Google ads, but 1000 genuine unique visitors a day is plenty to make upwards of $25,000 per year, per blog. And from there, the sky’s the limit.

Stefan – Yes, this is absolutely based on my own experience.

Johnathon – Thanks. Put the ads in place at the very beginning. Even when I start a new blog I build the advertisements into the design. There is no point in potentially wasting traffic. Plus, you never know when you are suddenly going to get a rush of traffic.

    Great article!!

I’m know I’m late to the game, but that last comment is a very good question. I’ve just started, and most places I’ve read had been pushing Google Adsense. You implied it’s not a very good idea. What do you recommend?

What about humor sites? I’m guessing those won’t rake in quite as much although Nik Richie at TheDirty.com seems to be doing well.

I just started up http://bluetoothdouchebag.com and am hoping it grows virally so I can make some money as well as inform the public about this growing epidemic.
