Blogging quicksand occurs when a blogger gets bogged down in too many procedures and projects that don’t move the blog, or the blogger, forward. The more the blogger does these things the quicker they sink.
Putting the metaphor aside for a moment this is a serious problem. And it can sneak up on you when you are not looking, as it has done to me recently. Thankfully for my sanity, not to mention my income, I spotted the signs in time and pulled myself free.
Here are a few common causes of blog quicksand,
- Redesigning too frequently.
- Starting new blogs with little or no time to commit to them.
- Obsessing over traffic and becoming glued to the stats screen.
- Social networking addiction.
Any of these can get in the way of the most important part of the blogging equation. Writing new and interesting content to keep your existing readers engaged and satisfied whilst growing your audience.
Don’t let the quicksand drag you down. Know the traps and keep an eye on your online habits to make sure your blog stays on solid ground.

Good content will make up for bad design. But good design will never make up for bad conent.
Good advice. I know exactly what you mean. I once spent a year (yes a whole damn year) redesigning a blog and by the end of the year I didn’t have the time to pick things up again. Glad to here you didn’t get pulled in too far this time!
i hear ya brother
Agreed on content being king. Sometimes though, bad design scares away the little stuffed animals.
Good advice, slightly silly metaphor. I assume this has happened to you recently.
I probably need to stop trying to do so much myself.
I concur with Nathan
