Newsvine: Read, Discuss, or Write the News

Jan 07  06

Newsvine

Though still in beta, Newsvine is becoming one of my favorite destinations for news. Described as a news “collective,” Newsvine aggregates news from traditional news sources (like the Associated Press and CNN) and enables discussion through commenting and live chat.

But what really makes Newsvine unique is the option to contribute to the news, either by writing your own “column” (with your own—free—subdomain, “yourname.newsvine.com,” or by “seeding” news stories by adding links to other sites. If you write a column, Newsvine will let you keep the ad revenue for your domain. In the future, Newsvine will let you automatically syndicate content from your blog.

The Newsvine site sports a great design, both readable for casual visitors and user-friendly for writers. So if you want added exposure for your blog, or want a turnkey way to expose your writing, reviews, opinions, and links to a built-in audience—or you’re just looking for a thriving news hungry community—have a look at Newsvine.

Newsvine is still in beta and you’ll need an invitation to participate. If you’d like an invitation, leave a comment here and I’ll gladly send you one. (Note: I have distributed all of my invitations, but feel free to scan the comments and contact some of the people I’ve invited).

If you’re enrolled in the beta, you’ll find my entries at futurosity.newsvine.com.

[…] Futurosity was kind enough to provide me an invitation to Newsvine. Newsvine is a nice Web 2.0 site that gives you access to AP news feeds that can be accessed by topic. Then, similar to digg, members have the ability to vote for news stories of interest, and comment on the stories. Members can “seed” their own stories from other websites, and can even right their own “columns.” If you would like one of my 20 invites, please leave a comment and I’ll email it to you. You can also bookmark this on del.icio.us or check the cosmos […]

    This sounds fascinating. Invitation please!

I particularly like the “seeding” concept and the idea of syndicating your own blog onto the site. I wonder if they’ll be able to tap into the stream of comments, ratings, tags etc. that are produced elsewhere.

    Your invitation has been sent.

Future plans call for the ability to automatically syndicate the RSS feed from your blog. Not sure about ratings, tags, etc., from other sources.
