Adam, Coda is indeed very good. Don't be put off, by all this, cause it seems to be missing from it. If you like editing CSS+html together, and occasionally tweaking some php in your WP blog, i think you can't do quicker than it.

My god, this is an amazing post. I was/am considering Coda, but I found all kinds of gems here. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the tips of my fingers (who, thanks to you, will have much less distance to travel on a regular basis now).

Cool article, and I'll be checking out some of the suggestions, especially the CSS widget (I already use the excellent PHP function reference...)

For commenting out multiple lines, have you used Coda's funky block editing feature? Alt-drag across the lines to select the range, then anything you type gets typed on _all_ the lines...

I use a combination of Textmate and YummyFTP. The combination is pretty powerful considering how much flexibility you have in YummyFTP preview pane. You can edit files directly on a server(and locally) or appoint Textmate as the editor and choose "upload on save." You can resume uploads and keep server connections alive as long as you want. My only complaint is tag auto-complete is not in TextMate and I could have sworn it used to be in there.

There are some great tools here, but I wish Coda would incorporate more power features. I hate bouncing back and forth between so many different apps and utilities.

Sweet free alternatives. I have been thinking of switching to as many open-source or free applications lately. This will indeed give me more options to consider.

^ As with many Coda menu items, it's easy to add a shortcut for this using the Keyboard & Mouse pref panel. I set encode entities to the Textmate binding, cmnd-shft-7

Regarding Special Characters (HTML Entities), you can type them as the standard characters using the keyboard shortcuts you'd use for anything else alt-g for copyright, alt-[ for open quote, etc. OR just paste in the text full of special characters.
When you want to encode them, select the portion of text (even a whole paragraph that includes a few special characters) and then, in the Coda menu-bar, go to Text>Encode Entities and all those special character will be encoded to the correct HTML entities. This means you can work on the text in a human-readbale form until you are ready to encode it all.

I think it would still be useful for the Coda clippings palette to include these because I don't remember the keyboard shortcuts for the less common characters.
