The nip tuck grid

I couldn’t leave it alone. Even though I had vowed to never mess around with it again I just had to take one last shot at tweaking the current Upstart Blogger design. Fortunately for fans of the last stable design this is only a very gentle nip tuck.

A slightly darker shade of red, more link uniformity with all links now in black bold text, archives added to the sidebar in response to numerous emails demanding quicker archive navigation, a minor change to the title and date typography and, perhaps most importantly, a 960 pixel grid to keep everything nicely balanced.

The final version of the style sheet is still sitting on my desktop waiting to be uploaded first thing in the morning after I’ve run it through the usual, and always necessary, browser tests. Having said that, the version that you see right now, at the time of writing, is pretty much how things are going to look.

I hope you like it. This one is here to stay. At least until I get the urge to scratch the design itch again.

Looking good so far. I like the darker red. The contrast is much better making it more readable, for me at least.

Love the darker shade of red. Love it.

    Kudos

That already looks much improved :) Congrats.

Still hate the typography for the dates though :), and the fact that the title is below the excerpt. But still, very nice.

…and some underscores removed whilst other (now noticeably more random) underscores remain. Shame; I liked the underscores.

I don’t think the red is as visually striking as the previous hue, and surely the point of listing the archives in the sidebar is so that the reader can browse easily? After all, a long list of months isn’t that helpful in annotating the archive. But you’ve placed it at the bottom of the page, where the reader has to scroll to reach it and where it sits next a load of boring old white, dead space.

Again, I think it’s a retrograde step and feel your niche is interesting content, not the design skills of your predecessor.

I have to agree with Jams, it is worst than before and it lost that special style it had.

This contrast makes it more readable? If I look at this post I am forced to look below it and to the right of it because of the dark bold type but not on the text of the post.

I think it looks now as a good idea started right and finished wrong.
