Why I just ordered a 64GB 3G Apple iPad

Yes I know. You can’t technically order an Apple iPad just yet. But if you happen to have a friend who works at an Apple store you can do all sorts of things that can help you get your name on lists.

Nothing clandestine. It’s just a fact of life that asking a friend who works at an Apple store to tell you when the Apple iPad comes into stock and is ready to order is probably going to get you a better response than just registering with millions of others for a faceless automated update.

Well, maybe. We shall see.

I don’t use an iPhone and probably never will. Although my house is full of Apple gear, ranging from a 10 year old Titanium Powerbook to a top of the range iMac, complete with unfeasibly large screen, plus the usual plethora of iPods, the iPhone has never really appealed to me.

Not because I don’t love Apple products but because the iPhone is an Apple product that I genuinely don’t think I would use. I’m old fashioned when it comes to phones. I want a phone to be a phone, nothing else. And if the great unwashed want to force phone manufactures to add masses of features to their products then I’m certainly not going to pay a premium to use one of them.

I use a Nokia e71. I can hear people laughing at how underpowered it is in comparison to a shiny iPhone. That maybe the truth, it almost certainly is the truth, but for making phone calls and receiving phone calls, there is, obviously, no difference at all.

As long as I can speak into one end of the phone and put my ear to the other I’m happy.

I don’t need a camera. I have a real camera.

I don’t need a video camera. I have a real camera.

Etc. etc. etc.

But all of these criticisms pale into insignificance compared to my real gripe with the iPhone. It’s too small to make good use of the features that it has. Again, I can hear the masses circling with their pitchforks. But please, hear me out. Does anyone really browse the internet comfortably on a tiny screen? Play movies on it? Play games on it?

Come on. Really?

Ok, maybe you do. And that’s cool. But it wouldn’t work for me.

Enter the iPad. Without looking into it in any detail it already allows me, and probably a lot of people like me, to get access to all of the wonderful iPhone stuff without being hamstrung by a tiny screen.

But there is another reason why I simply have to have an Apple iPad as soon as possible.

As a musician an Apple iPad will be an indispensable tool and something that I will write in more detail about at a new location in the near future.

That last line wasn’t meant as some kind of cryptic clue to the huge changes going on behind the scenes here at Upstart Blogger, it was just a simple statement of fact. When I write about the iPad again it will be on another blog that hasn’t even launched yet.

Talking of those behind the scenes changes, and going off on a slightly unrelated but possibly necessary tangent, a deal has been done, an agreement has been reached, the necessary investment and investors have been found, certain products that used to be for sale are now free, the multi author situation has been pruned and reshaped into something much more positive for everyone concerned, and everyone should, hopefully, be happy with the result as 2010 lurches forward at a frightening pace.

But for now, imagine this. You’re a musician. Therefore you are already probably using a Mac and almost certainly run either Sibelius or Finale. Both of those systems allow you to scan music in and export it out as a PDF.

Suddenly there is no need for any musician to ever carry truck loads of sheet music ever again. And as someone who spends an awful lot of time in rehearsal or recording studios, fighting with tattered copies of scores that carry warnings that make anyone with a writing implement fear for their lives, that is a big deal.

Any musician who has had to fumble through piles of lead sheets while a director silently barks (musicians will know what I mean) changes to the set list will understand just how tantalising this prospect really is.

And yes, I am aware that music serving tablet devices have been around for a long time, but none of them were made by Apple and none of them had the necessary desirability to usefulness ratio that the Apple iPad has. Nor did they give individual musicians the ability to email each other during those boring passages in the pit. Again, musicians will understand the pit reference while others may be left head scratching. Which is another reason why I should perhaps only go into more musician centric detail when I am fully installed elsewhere.

Will the Apple iPad save the newspaper industry? No. Because Newspapers are fine just the way they are and people like them the way they are.

Will the Apple iPad change the way we read books? Unlikely. If Amazon can’t change things with Kindle then can Apple climb that particular mountain? Maybe.

Will the Apple iPad be an indispensable tool for musicians and the must have piece of gear for 2010. Yes.

I think it will.

So now all I need to do is sit back and wait for my friend to call, hand over my credit card details and wait. In the meantime I’ll start preparing to gigabytes and gigabytes of scores that are sitting on multiple hard drives around my studio.

there are some big unknowns before I can actually decide if I would want one. If this works like the iPhone, which I assume it will since its based on the same OS I have 2 big questions that I need answered before I make the decision to get one.

    1. How do file transfers work? You have iwork, but how do you get documents on and off the ipad? In the windows world the iphone does not show up with drive access so I can’t just drag and drop files to and from my iphone, but the ipad would need to work this way but I am afraid it won’t. Another example of this would be an accessory that they have on the web site that allows you to hook up a card reader or a digital camera to import pictures, but there is no mention anywhere of an export.

    2. Multitasking. Can you imagine having a laptop and only be able to do one thing at a time. So while you are writing a document you can’t listen to streaming radio. Or if you need to hop over to safari to research something you have to close iwork. I do believe the rumors that this will be resolved like the rumors say, but as of right now its a no.

For me these are show stoppers until I can play with the device or read some really good reviews on the product. I am excited about the product as well (except for the name… really? ipad?) as I was blown away at the pricing options. I look forward to have more details about the product though…

Good luck with your new Ipad project Ashley.

I think you’re doing something really intuitive here. Targeting how musicians can use an Ipad will definitely hit a niche market, and maybe the only market for the Ipad.

So far, the press I’m reading for the Ipad has been pretty negative. No one is really impressed, some are going so far as to call it the ‘Apple killer’. I doubt that, but overall it does seem that Apple took everything people hated about the Iphone and just made it bigger.

As an average consumer, I just don’t understand why I would be compelled to purchase a tablet computer when I could put money towards a laptop. You seem to loose so much functionality. I see tablets being successful if they reach a price point of $100 or less.

Anyway, it sounds like you’re already thinking in the right direction. Targeting niche markets that could use the Ipad, cuz I just don’t see the Ipad having mass public appeal.

2 things bother me about this ipad:

    1) It’s a closed system. This is both good & bad. But just because music software exists on mac os x doesn’t mean it will for the ipad. Someone will have to make that and sell it in the app store.

    2) Expandability. This thing really needed an SD card / USB slot. This is a computer. It’s ok for a music player to have a fixed amount of space, but not for a computer.

I do think this should prove to be an interesting device for people that are not in to computers much. Older people might enjoy it due to the ease of use.

Kevin, I think that Apple is moving closer and closer to the cloud. An environment where external devices aren’t needed to access files. They see this as a totally wireless device in every sense.

Good Luck, thanks. I read some of the Apple killer stuff and just laughed. This is the same kind of thing that happened when the iMac came out and people complained about no floppy drive.

Wesley, I think the whole intention was to have a closed system as a benefit. To push people into using only what they want to use, not what they feel they need to use. Same goes for expandability. If everything is in the cloud, and I realise that we are not there yet, then wires are only needed for power. Frankly, I’m amazed Apple haven’t come up with some kind of solar power for a device like this to completely free it from and form of cable.

You are absolutely right about the demographic. But it will also appeal to the young, the very young in particular. And then they will grow up using it, and that’s how the real change will be achieved. I really think this is the start of something very big.

Hey man, you truly tell my feelings. A lot of friends of mine are discussing how useless pad is. But i dont think so. like you, i dont own an iphone, and never will, so ipad will definitely proves to be an excellent device for me. My family has four ipods, from the 3rd generation to the newest ipod classic. We are all music collectors. And the large quantity store is a worthy and portable player. And ipod touch is a low end device that has a small screen, a small keyboard, and hurt my eyes, what are already bad. I, personally, think your idea of buying the ipad is right. I can do my keynote design on ipad, or compose some music, if i could. But it is a device for those people who dont own an iphone because of its tiny screen, and want to experience the wonderful apps offered by apple. I want to get an ipad, no matter what.
By the way, are you gonna get a 3g version or the plain one, for me, 3G becomes kinda useless, plus an extra 120$ for each model, and 30$ for each month plan.

Kevin, you’ve hit the nail on the head. So many people – my friends, your friends, and 99% of the internet – are just slamming the iPad. And I just don’t think they get it. It really is the iMac all over again.

“It will fail because it hasn’t got a floppy drive” etc. etc. etc.

Thinking about it, I’ll probably go for the plain version. My initial urge was just to go for the top of the range but I really don’t see 3G being of any use to me.

Tell me more about your music collection. I’m something of a hoarder myself and proud owner of several groaning shelves!

As far as music goes, I’m not sure. I do a good bit of work on Finale, and don’t see how it will help me, musically, except for what has been mentioned above – carrying scores. What I would be interested in is the ability to “write” on the screen. I also write scripts and usually use a notepad. My son has a laptop that he takes to class and uses just as he would a spiral notebook. I’m not sure that the ipad will lend itself to such an application. Musically, I’m looking forward to what will be available. Hoping for great things. I agree about the book market. There is something about holding a book that cannot be replaced by a computer. However, I can see a day when students have digital books instead of a hard copy. College text books are ridiculously priced, and hopefully this can be addressed with the ipad. Also, when my kids were in Middle School, and High School, I was concerned about the weight that they carried in their backpacks, so, maybe this can be dealt w/ by digital books. Who knows? I must admit that the ipad is a “cool” bit of technology, at which Apple excels. Since they are not that expensive, relatively speaking, I will probably get one “down the road.” But now, back to my MacBook Pro, and Finale!
