WordPress Theme: The Morning After by The Masterplan
I don’t usually go out of my way to recommend WordPress themes designed by other people, but there are so few magazine-style WordPress themes (see my own Upstart Blogger Futurosity Magazine) that the release of The Morning After, by Arun Kale of The Master Plan, is worth a special mention. If Futurosity Magazine isn’t what you’re looking for, The Morning After might be just the ticket.
I’m a fan of Arun’s web design, which includes sites like Love Made Visible and introversion. The Morning After (pictured below) displays the same attention to detail evident in his other designs.
The Morning After features a three-column home page with featured post, recent posts list with thumbnails, and asides. There’s an option for emailing posts to your friends and a printer-friendly view for printing posts. The design is clean, information rich without being cluttered, and flexible.
Highly recommended.

I think The Morning After is one of the better looking themes available. Definitely worth checking out.
Yeah, I’m with you on this one Robert. A great theme no doubt. I enjoyed it so much I had to point it out on my site as well. I’d love to see more magazine style WP themes. Off the top of my head, Arun’s theme and yours are the only one’s that come to mind, that I’d use. Actually there was one more, a darker one, but I can’t recall who made it or what it’s called, started with an “M” maybe. In any event, I bet there’s a thrist out there for quality magazine styles.
Thirst dammit, thirst. That should be thirst up there. I had a recent conversation with someone who had a heightened sense of proper grammar, and pointed out a minor mistake of mine. I’ll be paranoid for a few days now.
@Amos: It’s a great theme. I don’t know of any other magazine-style themes that I would recommend.
Say, your site is looking spiffy these days. Love the brash blog title! And hey, what’s with all the great writing?! The Only General Writing Advice You Will Ever Need, The Perfect Blog Post, I Watched a Zombie Eat a Muffin Today. I don’t remember seeing any of that last time I hit your site.
And I’d recommend everyone check out your themes, too… Downloads: With Prices So Low They No Longer Exist.
I appreciate those links Robert. Awful nice of you. As for the writing, I’ve been on a roll I guess. I went into a hard summer funk. I got into this mind trap where I’d have an idea, but couldn’t get myself to write, and post it. Not sure what the deal was. Think I had a blogging identity crisis.
I finally told myself to stop being such a pansy, and throw down pretty much everything. You know, George Costanza’s “Do the Opposite” approach. It’s made me a much happier blogger.
Not to tell you what to do Robert, but you should consider making another magazine style theme. Your designs have such a unique quality, and the WP community could use more of them. I’d like to help out myself, but there’s a degree of intricacy that magazine style’s demand, and I’m not quite there yet, not sure I’ll ever put in the time to get there. You on the other hand :)
Thanks again Robert. And I’m digging on this speak bubble here.
Robert,
Thanks for the generous review. I still feel that the UB Altera theme puts mine to shame, though :)
Nicely done, giving credit where credit is due. I still feel new to this world and finding clean, user-friendly, reader-friendly design has been challenging. Thanks Robert for pointing out the solid ones. Speaking of magazine-style, I’m still looking for a theme that showcases photography well and allows for good reading. There can be both, yes?
@Robert,
This theme doesn’t work well in IE …… :(
Cal: What do you mean the theme doesn’t work well in IE? Here is an example of a site using the theme, it works great in IE as well as other browsers.
Sorry for the delay in responding. Been out of town…
@Amos: You’re welcome for the links. People should absolutely check out your themes and your great writing. I probably will make another magazine style theme. I have plans to redesign Futurosity when I find some time.
@Deb: I’ve thought about designing a blog for photography, but haven’t gotten around to it. You never know. Be sure to subscribe, maybe I’ll design one in the next couple of months.
@Arun: You’re very welcome for the review. Your theme is great and deserves the attention. I may start reviewing other themes more often. There are some great ones out there, but they’re hard to find.
i tried to upload the tma folder to my theme folder directory but it doesn’t appear in presentation, seems to be different from the regular wp themes.
cool template…i’d download for my dot com blog…
Is there a way for this template to show the last 5 posts (or number of posts) on “LATEST POST” area of homepage?
Hope someone can help. Thanks
Doesn’t appear to play well with firefox. Checking out the link above (http://www.londontheatreblog.co.uk/), safari shows the thumbnails flush left as they should be, firfox three has the thumbs and text all forced right.
Straight out of the box (fresh install of WP and the theme) the “contact” section at the top is behind the “welcome” text in firefox on my comps at least. Safari is fine.
Similar to earlier posting, is there a way to see more than one post on the home page. Presently it shows up only last post.
Just a quick note to everyone on this thread – your advice and comments sealed the deal. I selected The Morning After, worked with a great developer to customize it and am proud of my newest website — http://www.maconraine.com – it went officially live yesterday and we’re still doing some fine tuning. Thanks again!
