Wrestling with the ethics and realities of passive online income creation

My traffic is racing. I know why. And, all other things being equal, this increase in visitors is going to endure. As beta test pilots promote the Genesis Rocket as part of the first wave of the Upstart Blogger affiliate program an army, albeit small in size, of income hungry bloggers and twitters are working hard to drive traffic towards me.

It’s a virtuous circle and everyone, eventually, is invited. The Genesis Rocket is used by the affiliates to dramatically increase their social networking influence. And then, because as users they are confident in the product, a handsome slice of their newly found attention is channeled back to Upstart Blogger in pursuit of affiliate sales.

And those sales are coming in. Slowly but surely, giving me and my small band of beta test affiliates a steady income stream.

But those sales aren’t what I want to talk about today.

Today I want to talk about the situation that is developing and developing fast and take a little time to address a few issues before they become issues.

My traffic is growing like never before. My unique visitor count is rising hour by hour. And my advertising revenue is, of course, following that traffic.

This raises a question. If it is possible to create a virtuous spiral of growing traffic and then sit back and watch it grow, why not just create a handful of such spirals, each with it’s own blog with it’s own targeted advertising, and just watch the money roll in?

The answer, from my own personal point of view, is one that I hope will satisfy those of you who have some concerns.

I’m not just in this game for the money.

It’s that simple. Just because I can create a passive income stream it doesn’t follow that I will do so and become entirely passive.

Blogging can make you rich. No one disputes that anymore. But it can do much more than that. For instance, it’s no secret that one of my other blogs drives and financially supports my jazz career. And that, to me at least, is more important than just cash.

Can the Genesis Rocket be used to generate a passive online income? Yes.

Does that mean that the Genesis Rocket will only be used as a purely money making tool? No. At least, I certainly hope not.

And besides, is passive online income creation such a bad thing if it allows people to be free to pursue the things that they are really passionate about without having to worry about the financial realities that would otherwise occupy their time?
